Is there a battle raging in your mouth?
The main joint that operates your jaw is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Now that's a mouthful (no pun intended), so we call this type of dentistry TMJ Dentistry, for simplicity sake.
TMJ Dentistry is a part of neuromuscular dentistry which treats the muscles, joints and teeth--the entire system that manages the position and function of your jaw.
A TMJ or neuromuscular dentist works to create a harmonious relationship between all three (muscles, joints and teeth) so that your jaw is in proper alignment. TMJ Dentistry is a different speciality than 'general' or 'cosmetic' dentistry--it takes a more holistic approach, recognizing the importance of the muscles and nerves and treats the jaw so that it can remain in a comfortable, relaxed position. This creates 'harmony' with your bite.
Your teeth may not fit together properly. Or even if they do, your bite might be pushing your jaw joints and muscles out of alignment.
When this happens the muscles are forced out of alignment--they are fighting to keep everything in the proper position--and become tight, tired and sore. Headaches, sore jaw, teeth grinding, clenching and a number of other symptoms are often the result of an improper bite. There can also be no pain and chipped, worn, cracked and shifting teeth can result from a misaligned bite.

Where is my TMJ?
Your TMJ is your jaw joint. You can feel it by placing your finger under your cheekbone, right about the middle of your ear. When you open and close your mouth, you can feel movement - that is your jaw joint or TMJ. When too much stress is placed on it, pain or problems may develop. These can include headaches, sore jaw, tingling in your hands and fingers and neck, shoulder and back pain.
